VAST Data was founded in 2016 by Renen Hallak, Jeff Denworth, and Shachar Fienblit, building enterprise data storage technology using a distinctive all-flash architecture, meaning storage built entirely using flash memory (solid-state) technology rather than traditional spinning hard disk drives, at a price point and scale the founders argued could make all-flash storage practical for very large enterprise datasets that had historically relied on a mix of flash and traditional disk-based storage given flash memory's historically higher cost per unit of storage capacity relative to traditional hard disk drives, even though flash storage generally offers significantly faster data access performance.
