Uptake was founded in 2014 by Brad Keywell, a serial entrepreneur who had previously co-founded Groupon and several other companies, based on the observation that heavy industrial equipment operators, including manufacturers, mining companies, and other industries relying on expensive, safety-critical physical equipment, generate substantial sensor and operational data from their machinery but historically had limited ability to systematically analyze this data to predict equipment failures before they occur, missing opportunities to perform maintenance proactively based on actual equipment condition data rather than either waiting for costly, potentially dangerous unexpected failures or performing maintenance on a less efficient fixed calendar schedule that may not accurately reflect when a specific piece of equipment genuinely needs attention. Uptake's platform applies machine learning and data analytics to industrial equipment sensor data to support predictive maintenance, helping industrial operators anticipate when specific pieces of equipment are likely to require maintenance or are at elevated risk of failure, letting maintenance teams intervene proactively based on data-driven predictions rather than reactive responses to unexpected equipment failures, which can be costly both in direct repair expense and in lost production time, and in some industrial contexts, can create meaningful safety risks if critical equipment fails unexpectedly during operation. The company has built partnerships with major industrial equipment manufacturers, using sensor data from equipment already deployed in the field to build predictive models that can then be offered as a value-added service either directly by Uptake or in partnership with the original equipment manufacturers themselves, an approach that has let Uptake access substantial industrial sensor data through these manufacturer partnerships rather than needing every individual industrial customer to independently instrument their own equipment specifically for Uptake's analytics platform. Uptake's customers span heavy industrial sectors including manufacturing, mining, agriculture, and construction equipment operators seeking to reduce unplanned equipment downtime and maintenance costs through more data-driven, predictive maintenance approaches. The company has raised substantial venture funding from investors including GreatPoint Ventures and New Enterprise Associates, reaching unicorn status, competing with other industrial AI and predictive maintenance platforms including SparkCognition.
