Fivetran was founded in 2012 by George Fraser and Taylor Brown, based on the observation that building and maintaining the data pipelines needed to move information from the many different software applications a company uses, such as its CRM, marketing tools, payment processor, and internal databases, into a centralized data warehouse for analysis had historically required significant custom engineering work, since each source system has its own data format, API quirks, and periodic changes that can break a custom-built pipeline if not actively maintained. Fivetran's platform provides pre-built, automatically maintained data connectors for a very large number of common business software applications and databases, letting data teams set up reliable data pipelines to their cloud data warehouse within minutes rather than the days or weeks custom pipeline development typically required, while Fivetran's team handles the ongoing maintenance burden of keeping each connector working correctly as source systems change their APIs or data formats over time, a maintenance burden that, multiplied across dozens or hundreds of data sources a company might use, represents a very significant and often underappreciated ongoing engineering cost for data teams building and maintaining these pipelines themselves. This "extract and load" automation has become a foundational piece of what's often called the "modern data stack," typically used alongside a cloud data warehouse such as Snowflake or BigQuery and a transformation tool such as dbt, letting data teams focus their engineering effort on higher-value data analysis and modeling work rather than the comparatively low-value but operationally essential task of keeping basic data pipelines running reliably. Fivetran's customer base spans companies of many sizes across industries that rely on data-driven decision-making and need to consolidate data from numerous different business systems. The company has raised very substantial venture funding from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, ICONIQ Growth, and Matrix Partners, reaching a valuation exceeding $5.6 billion, competing with other data integration platforms including Airbyte and Stitch.
