ThoughtSpot was founded in 2012 by Ajeet Singh and Amit Prakash, based on the observation that traditional business intelligence and data analytics tools have historically required either significant technical expertise to build and customize reports and dashboards, or relied on a relatively small number of data analysts within an organization to build and maintain reports and dashboards on behalf of the broader business, creating a bottleneck where most business users seeking a specific data insight needed to either learn complex analytics tools themselves or submit a request to a data team and wait for that request to be fulfilled, rather than being able to directly and immediately explore data themselves using an accessible, intuitive interface. ThoughtSpot's platform lets business users type natural language questions about their company's data, similar to a search engine query, and receive instant, automatically generated data visualizations and answers, without needing to know how to write database queries or build a report using traditional business intelligence tool interfaces, an approach the company has described as bringing "search-driven analytics" to business intelligence, letting a much broader range of non-technical business users directly explore and answer their own data questions rather than depending entirely on a smaller number of dedicated data analysts to build every specific report or answer every ad hoc data question that arises across a large organization. The company has increasingly incorporated generative AI capabilities into its platform, including AI-generated natural language summaries and explanations of underlying data patterns, further extending its original mission of making data analysis more accessible to non-technical business users without requiring them to learn traditional business intelligence tool interfaces or specialized data query languages. ThoughtSpot has positioned itself as complementary to, or in some cases a modern alternative to, more traditional business intelligence platforms that require more specialized technical skill to build and maintain reports and dashboards. The company's customers span large enterprises across many industries seeking to expand self-service data analysis access to a broader range of non-technical business users. ThoughtSpot has raised very substantial venture funding from investors including Lightspeed Venture Partners, Khosla Ventures, and Silver Lake Waterman, reaching a reported valuation exceeding $4.2 billion according to PitchBook data, competing with Tableau and Power BI.
