AlphaSense was founded in 2011 by Jack Kokko and Raj Neervannan, drawing on the observation that investment professionals, corporate strategists, and consultants spend enormous amounts of time manually searching through scattered sources, including broker research, company filings, earnings call transcripts, and news, to find the small number of insights actually relevant to a given decision. AlphaSense built a search engine specifically tuned for this kind of professional financial and business content, using natural language processing to understand context and financial terminology well enough to surface relevant passages buried deep inside long documents, rather than just matching keywords. The platform aggregates content from thousands of sources, including sell-side equity research, regulatory filings, company transcripts, trade journals, and news, and layers on tools like sentiment analysis, thematic search across an entire portfolio of documents, and generative AI-based summarization to help users quickly synthesize what would otherwise take hours of manual reading. AlphaSense significantly expanded its content footprint through the 2020 acquisition of Stream, a prominent expert transcript library, and later added its own generative AI assistant capable of answering research questions with citations back to source documents, an important feature for financial professionals who need to trace any AI-generated claim back to its underlying source. The company's customers span investment banks, hedge funds, asset managers, corporations, and consulting firms. AlphaSense has raised well over $1 billion in venture funding from investors including Viking Global, BOND, and Sequoia-affiliated funds, reaching a valuation of several billion dollars and unicorn status, and it competes with financial research and data platforms such as FactSet, Bloomberg, and expert-network-adjacent tools like Tegus.
