Perplexity was founded in 2022 by Aravind Srinivas, Denis Yarats, Johnny Ho, and Andy Konwinski, building an AI-driven search product that responds to user queries with a direct, synthesized natural-language answer drawing on multiple current web sources, along with citations linking back to the original sources, positioning itself as an alternative to traditional search engines' conventional list-of-links results format, and drawing comparisons to, and direct competition with, the search-related features that both Google and OpenAI's ChatGPT have subsequently built into their own respective products as the broader "answer engine" category has grown increasingly competitive. Perplexity has expanded its product offerings beyond its original core search and question-answering functionality into a broader AI assistant platform, including agentic shopping and browsing features, and has pursued partnerships with device makers and other technology companies to embed its AI search technology more broadly, while facing significant and intensifying competition not only from OpenAI and Google's own expanding AI search capabilities but also from a wave of other well-funded AI search and browsing startups. The company's estimated revenue run rate reached approximately $500 million by April 2026, reflecting growth of roughly 370% year over year. In Augment's Q2 2026 Power 20 rankings, Perplexity fell three positions to #19 even though its trading activity on the Augment platform declined only modestly, by 10.3%, ranking #11 in overall activity for the quarter, with the ranking attributing its rank decline primarily to a comparatively modest 1.8% increase in its estimated secondary-market share price, which was too small to keep pace with faster-moving Power 20 peers such as Saronic, Replit, and Project Prometheus, each of which saw stronger investor enthusiasm driven by new financings and faster reported growth during the same quarter.
