Cognition AI was founded in 2023 by Scott Wu, Steven Hao, and Walden Yan, building Devin, which the company marketed as the first fully autonomous AI software engineer capable of independently planning, writing, testing, and debugging code to complete substantial software engineering tasks, rather than functioning only as an assistant suggesting individual lines or snippets of code for a human developer to review and integrate, as most earlier AI coding tools like GitHub Copilot had done. Devin's launch in early 2024, accompanied by demonstration videos showing it autonomously completing multi-step coding tasks including fixing bugs, building small applications, and even earning income on freelance coding platforms, generated enormous attention and positioned Cognition as a leading example of the broader industry shift toward more autonomous "agentic" AI systems capable of completing complex, multi-step tasks with reduced human oversight, in software engineering and beyond. Cognition raised substantial venture funding at rapidly escalating valuations reflecting intense investor interest in autonomous coding agents, including a $400 million round in September 2025 valuing the company at $10.2 billion, and a Series D in May 2026 at a $26 billion valuation, bringing total funding across its recent rounds to more than $1.4 billion. In December 2025, Cognition made a major strategic move by acquiring Windsurf, the AI-native code editor and agentic coding assistant that had previously operated as Codeium before its own founding team departed to Google in a separate July 2025 transaction, for approximately $250 million, giving Cognition both Devin's autonomous agent technology and Windsurf's established IDE product and customer base. Cognition has since worked to integrate the two products, releasing a proprietary coding model called SWE-1.5 optimized for the combined Windsurf platform and embedding Devin's autonomous capabilities directly into the Windsurf editor, positioning the combined company as a serious challenger to Cursor and GitHub Copilot in the fast-growing and intensely competitive AI coding assistant market.
