Epic Games was founded in 1991 by Tim Sweeney, building the Unreal Engine, one of the most widely used game development engines in the industry, licensed by countless other game studios to build their own titles, before Epic's own Fortnite, launched in 2017, became a cultural phenomenon and one of the most successful video games in history, generating enormous revenue through its free-to-play battle royale format monetized through optional cosmetic purchases rather than traditional upfront game sales. Epic Games became a prominent and unusually aggressive challenger to the dominant app store policies of Apple and Google, most notably filing a high-profile antitrust lawsuit against Apple in 2020 after Apple removed Fortnite from its App Store for violating policies requiring in-app purchases to go through Apple's payment system and associated commission, a legal battle that resulted in significant, though partial, court rulings requiring Apple to allow developers greater ability to direct users to alternative payment methods outside Apple's own in-app purchase system. The company has continued operating its own Epic Games Store, a competitor to Valve's dominant Steam platform for PC game distribution, notably charging game developers a lower revenue-sharing percentage than Steam's traditional cut, part of a broader strategy of positioning itself as a more developer-friendly alternative across gaming distribution and engine licensing. Epic Games has raised substantial venture funding from investors including Tencent, Sony, and KKR, reaching a valuation exceeding $31.5 billion at its peak, and remains privately held despite its massive commercial scale.
