Blue Origin was founded in 2000 by Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, pursuing an ambitious long-term vision of enabling millions of people to live and work in space, initially operating with relatively little public disclosure for many years before gradually becoming more publicly visible as its programs matured, including its New Shepard suborbital vehicle, which has flown numerous crewed tourism and research missions to the edge of space, and its considerably larger New Glenn orbital rocket, intended to compete for national security, commercial satellite, and other orbital launch contracts against SpaceX and other established and emerging launch providers. Blue Origin has faced a long-running public narrative contrasting its slower operational pace with SpaceX's much faster iteration and higher launch cadence, though the company has continued advancing New Glenn toward a more regular flight cadence following its initial orbital launches, while also developing the BE-4 rocket engine, which it supplies to United Launch Alliance's Vulcan rocket in addition to using on its own vehicles, and pursuing a NASA-supported commercial space station concept called Orbital Reef, developed in partnership with other aerospace companies, as part of a broader industry transition toward commercial replacements for the aging International Space Station. Blue Origin has also developed the Blue Moon lunar lander under a NASA contract as part of the Artemis program aimed at returning astronauts to the Moon. The company has been funded primarily through Jeff Bezos's personal capital rather than traditional venture financing, reflecting his stated long-term commitment to the company's mission regardless of near-term commercial returns, and competes with SpaceX and other launch providers across its various commercial and government-oriented space programs.
